Steve Rogers
Flexible on Steve's age/point in canon, but defaults to the modern era, with the beard. Rugged Steve.
The serum amplifies everything that is inside, so good becomes great; bad becomes worse. Because the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows… Compassion.
Everybody knows the history of Captain America, right? There's that exhibit in the Smithsonian, all those historical newspaper headlines, the newsreels of his deeds during the war. Who remembers the scrappy kid from Brooklyn who was eternally sick, perennially weak, and repeatedly turned down for service at a time when every able-bodied man was needed? One man does: James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes. But we'll get back to him later.
Born in 1918 to Sarah and Joseph Rogers, Steven Grant “Steve” Rogers was a sickly child who spent most of his young life struggling. Cared for only by his mother, he was perennially sick, suffering from an unnatural frailness, asthma, and heart problems. He was seen as an easy target by bullies, but within him grew a sense of right and wrong inspired by those troubles and he took it upon himself to stand up to those who used their size and strength against others. That scrappy nature led him to a situation where one man, normally just a spectator, saw that pluckiness and stood by his side. Bucky Barnes would become his friend for life and the two would become nearly inseparable.
“Thank you, Buck, but I can get by on my own.”
“The thing is, you don't have to.”
Soon the United States became involved in World War II and every able body was needed to fight. Neither man hesitated to offer themselves up for recruitment, signing up as soon as they could. Where the hearty and hale Bucky had no issues with enlistment, Steve faced denial time after time and struggled to find a way to serve his country against the bullies he saw in the Nazi war machine. He falsified documents on several occasions, risking prison time until a chance meeting put him on the journey towards being a hero.
The night before Sergeant Barnes was due to ship out for England, he took Steve to the Stark Expo in an attempt to cheer him up. It allowed him to apply again, but this time that plucky nature was noticed by one Doctor Abraham Erskine, a scientist with a project to create a super-soldier. He seemed impressed by Steve's reasons for wanting to join up, allowing him to take part in his experimental program. Steve jumped at the chance to serve his country in any way he could and accepted on the spot.
“I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from.”
“Well, there are already so many big men fighting this war. Maybe what we need now is the little guy, huh?”
While he was unable to compare physically to any of the other candidates, he showed his ability to think outside the box repeatedly and a willingness to self-sacrifice for the well-being of others. Every moment of every day during his training, he proved he was what Erskine wanted; a good man, not a perfect soldier. It led to his being chosen as the candidate for Project Rebirth when Erskine had to make that decision.
The journey to the secret facility brought up many memories that made him the man he was that day. Memories of being bullied, pushed around, even being rescued by his big brother, Barnes. He brought these up in a discussion in the car, proving yet again that he would stand up in the face of adversity, this time for something he couldn't even change; his height. It was time for him to move on and start a new era in his life.
“How do you feel?”
“Taller.”
“You look taller.”
With the procedure complete and the celebrations cut short by an assassin, Rogers found himself with a new lease of life and a desire to bring his friend's murderer to justice. Where there once stood a frail boy from Brooklyn, now stood a man with the strength and physicality to do what he wanted, and the humility and sense of self to do what was right.
⭐ - He likes to spend downtime drawing, reading, or watching movies, trying to catch up on the decades he's missed and figure out all those references. He enjoyed Princess Bride and occasionally ends up quoting it without realizing it. He's starting to listen to more music as time goes by, enjoying more modern rock music as well as traditional jazz and big band music. Blame Tony for his tastes in rock.
⭐ - Computers and technology don't phase him at all. Nat and Clint spent a lot of time teaching him how to use a smartphone, and while he doesn't own a laptop or desktop, it doesn't stop him from being able to look things up on Google or searching through Wikipedia.
⭐ - Despite knowing exactly how to use a smartphone, he still sends texts formatted like telegrams: “HEY SAM STOP WHAT ARE YOU DOING STOP WANT TO GRAB A DRINK STOP” This is entirely intentional and every time someone tells him that’s not how it works, it makes him giggle. Tony is currently top of the table with 17 times, Nat and Clint tied at 11, Sam gave up after 4.
⭐ - The internet. Ooh boy. Sometimes he can get lost for some time when he goes looking for things. He's figured out what wiki walking is, and it ends up with him spending large periods of time just absorbing information.
⭐ - Open-minded, he's happy to learn and try things out. How else is he supposed to figure out if something isn't for him? There are a few things he won't do, and the modern day's lack of taboos on certain things might strike him as odd, but none of it strikes him as 'wrong' as long as people aren't causing harm.
⭐ - Kept the two bikes he 'acquired' from S.H.I.E.L.D., a Harley Softail Slim, and a Harley Street 750. The former reminds him of the SSR's custom Harley WLA “Liberator” he used during World War II, but the latter is a much more maneuverable beast.
⭐ - Personally, I see Steve as more of an Indian Scout rider than a Harley rider. Post Endgame, he rides an Indian Scout (with the pillion seat).
⭐ - Steve had asthma as a young man and was prescribed cigarettes to help (a common occurrence in the 30s-50s). When he became a specimen of human perfection via Project Rebirth, he no longer had the requirement to smoke, and since they didn't have any effect on him, he shared the packs he got in his C-Rations with other soldiers. WWII Steve may occasionally be seen with a cigarette between his fingers or lips, but modern Steve won't.
⭐ - Steve doesn't need sleep after the Super Soldier Serum took effect, but it's psychosomatic. Normally he sleeps, but during combat, or any reason that he's too busy to sleep, he can keep going on and on without stopping.
⭐ - Returned to the present after returning the Infinity Stones from whence they came. This version of Steve still believes in doing things for the greater good of people, and being entirely selfless. He couldn't go back in time without interfering with events as they happened, so he feels it best to stay where he can do the most good. This is the default setting for room play.
Alternatively - as an RP hook - Steve goes back to be with Peggy, where he finds her at the place she mentioned before he buried the plane during WWII. She went to honor his memory, only for him to turn up for the dance and to live the rest of his - very long - life with her.
⭐ - Will still let the occasional “Language!” slip out when he doesn't realize it; it was originally aimed at Bucky for his use in polite company, but he's a soldier and those words will slip out of his mouth from time to time. He'll avoid swearing in public when he can, unless under pressure. (Normally played more for fun than anything serious.)
⭐ - Steve speaks multiple languages (Japanese, German, Russian, etc.), possibly terribly, because he picked them up during the War. (This accounts for terrible translations from Google Translate because I don't speak all these languages.)
⭐ - Given how he throws his shield, works with angles, and can pull off amazing feats, Steve shows prodigious knowledge of maths and physics; at the very least, the mechanics behind trajectories and friction, especially where the “magic” of his shield is concerned. It's not something he's even aware of doing, it just happens.
⭐ - Steve's Personality
⭐ - Steve is a good Christian boy, even if he doesn't go to church anymore. While it's never stated exactly which denomination, “there's only one God,” implies this very strongly. While he's fairly progressive for someone from his time, I believe it means he was saving himself for marriage given the way things were at the time, or as he puts it, “the right partner.” In addition, while there was birth control, there wasn't a huge amount of extra-marital sex until post-war, where single mother pregnancy near tripled across the board (the Baby Boomer generation). There are strong implications that Steve takes things slow and steady; Two and a half years for his first kiss with Peggy, when he's putting his life on the line and may not come back, then the same again when he kisses Sharon. He has confidence in spades in almost everything in life, but the shyness that comes from being overlooked as a frail young man still comes to the fore when he's talking to women. Only three people saw him as more than a scrawny kid: Erskine, Buck, and Peggy.
This is deliberately ambiguous, allowing for possibilities during roleplay. Steve will be played as experienced and with knowledge of some kinks by default, but still having problems when dealing with women he doesn't know in a social environment.
⭐ - Steve did try dating after being thawed, but with everything going on in the world, it was hard to find someone he could bond with. “Believe it or not, it's hard to find someone with shared life experience.” Nat spends a lot of time trying to set Steve up with various people working for SHIELD, and the only one he tries anything with is Sharon (before he knows she's there as Agent 13, and before he knows she's Peggy's great-niece). Once he finds out what she is, he's downright cold to her until much later when he finds out who she is and kisses her before going to do something that might get him killed. He's not inexperienced with dating, he just hasn't found the right partner in the present.
“ Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. ”
During the Battle of Earth, Steve used Mjolnir in addition to his usual shield to fight Thanos. He built a connection with the powerful weapon that, due to the curiosity of time travel, brought her back to him after she was shattered by Hela during the events of Ragnarök. She may be a little different than he remembers, but she chose him, and he will prove himself worthy.
“ I know how much Lola means to you. ”
Steve missed out on the Swinging 60s, but Coulson's Corvette brings him a taste of that time. Not necessarily in the way someone might expect, however. The former Corvette, now in human form, needs to be taught how to exist in her new form, and where Phil will tell everyone, “Don't touch Lola!” Steve gets a pass. Between the two of them, Lola has a pair of mentors who'll give her what she needs to be a person.
“ You don't have to play the Star Spangled Banner right now. You can just be Steve. ”
During his time as a dancing monkey selling War Bonds, he ran into Sally being treated the same. She didn't just see him as a piece of meat to be conquered, and they bonded over shared experiences. The naive, innocent boy learned plenty from her before he made the sacrifice play and saved the world. Fast forward decades and luck meant he runs into her daughter, cultivating a relationship with the next generation. With her mother's stories, she knew more about him than he about her, but all that can change.
✔ Story over pure smut (but it doesn't hurt to ask; smut in context is fine).
✔ Public first, then private (although playing in public may sometimes be an issue).
✔ Story consistency (bruises/injuries/experiences within an RP will stick around, among other things).
✔ Snark (you will get shit from Steve and his writer - it's not personal, it means he likes you).
✘ Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, is a canon character from Marvel; this version specifically from the MCU (Earth-199999).
✘ IRL: Taken, not looking.
✘ Inlines by me.
✘ I have seen as far as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
✘ This Steve will grow and evolve as I watch the movies, and as I roleplay him, so there will be some diversion from canon at some point.
✘ I am working on my familiarity with the character. I may make mistakes. I am open to constructive criticism (“you're wrong because X, you should have done Y because Z”) but will ignore criticism without merit (“you're wrong” and “you suck”).
❔ Friend Requests: A random friend request from someone I don't know will be turned down. A little contact goes a long way toward having these accepted.
❔ IC Approach: This is mood, and approach, dependent. While I may turn some down, I will roll with good ones. Take a chance, see how it goes! More often than not I will roll with it.
