Joshua Makala

Mr. Makala scores highly in all physical tests performed by doctors over the years, and any deterioration due to age seems to be dulled. There is nothing out of the ordinary during blood tests, nor do any evaluations bring up anything unexpected, but to say he is a peak physical specimen of humankind does the man a disservice. While he may be just an outlier when it comes to expectations, we would like to keep him under further observation to see if any part of his health regimen or genetics may be used in the future support of other individuals.

Subject shows a high level of creativity, being able to describe fictional creatures and people as if they are real. He also shows a strong grasp of the English language, high-level mathematics, and scientific principles to a high level, but has only completed a high school level of qualifications about those subjects. Mr. Makala shows a strong ability to learn new things and displays a strong grasp of concepts that cause problems for most people.

Joshua Makala appears to be stable but does believe in the existence of magic and the supernatural. It doesn't affect his day-to-day life anymore, but should be kept under observation in case of issues in the future. He shows problems with social situations, occasionally displaying low levels of anxiety when in large groups, but one-to-one situations appear to be less of a problem. Joshua is aware of his issues in public, and can usually manage to keep things under control. Although he had issues with his temper as a child (see [REDACTED]), as he's grown older, he's learned various techniques to keep it under wraps. There are moments where it overcomes him, but the violence he used to display appears to be gone.

Further, observation continues to indicate that Mr. Makala is a normally functioning individual (both mentally and physically) and no longer needs to be kept under observation.

While the official paperwork says that Joshua Noa Makala is the son of Noa and Jessica Makala, the reality is something slightly different. Yes, Jessica is his mother, but his father was an unknown Warlock, a dalliance while Noa was busy with his military life. He was charming, and she was lonely; one thing led to another and nine months later they had a strapping baby boy. Nobody would ever know what happened that night.

There was nothing out of the ordinary as he grew up, but it was obvious he didn't have his adoptive father's genetics. He grew bigger and broader than anyone else in his family, yet nobody said a word to the family. Certain people whispered murmurs and rumors behind closed doors, but anyone who knew the family squashed them as soon as they started. It all became obvious when Joshua became a teenager and went through puberty.

In theory, high school shouldn't be a problem for someone of Joshua's intelligence and build. However, the practicality didn't match when he started to see and do things that no human should be capable of. At first, everything was fine, scoring straight As in classes, and taking part in various athletics squads until he turned 16. Then things started to go awry. Little things: seeing people who weren't there, sparks coming from his fingertips, objects being knocked off of surfaces without reason.

Everyone started to see Joshua as bad luck, avoiding him in social situations, benching him from important games, and his grades dropped. He was starting to struggle in everyday life too, heading to his bedroom and locking himself away from everyone. It took a lot of coaxing for his parents to get him to see a counselor about his mental health, yet the reality was something entirely different: he was coming into his abilities as a Warlock, and without training, they were manifesting without warning.

Luckily for Joshua, his birth father had been keeping an eye on him and came to his rescue under the guise of a specialist in mental health. It took years of training (disguised as therapy) for him to finally control his astral projection and spellcasting abilities, but by the end of high school, he had enough control to move on to college.

Training continued while Joshua went on to college to study psychology, using it as an excuse to continue working with his birth father. He continued to excel in the athletics program, earning the scholarship that enabled him to attend for the duration of his qualification, but he had moments where life took a heavy toll on him. He had control of his abilities, but pushing himself to learn the more powerful incantations and rituals, along with learning of his immortality, put him on a very dark path he nearly followed without thinking.

An accident during football training left one of his closest friends hospitalized with a severe spinal injury. Joshua visited every day after college, spending his time reading and talking with his buddy. It was entirely by accident that he found he could heal even severe injuries when he held his friend's hand and spoke those fateful words: “It should have been me.” It wasn't the words that did it, but the intent behind them; the love and care he had, and the wish to do something to help. While it wasn't frontpage worthy, many of the local newspapers ran stories over the following few days over the college's star football player's miraculous recovery.

The pressure of school, his friend's injuries, the public attention, and knowing he was different, all took a toll on Joshua's mental health. He started to withdraw from his friends but kept working to graduate from his course. Nobody knew where he went as soon as the ceremony was complete.

The truth was that he needed to go somewhere away from humanity to learn about himself, his powers, and what he could do to help people. He'd heard the rumors of Warlocks and Witches being evil, but that wasn't who he was. He saw himself as a healer, someone who could improve the world if only he could improve his control over his abilities.

With a qualification that required him to work face to face with people, and a desire to hide from the public eye, Joshua was left with a quandary. He took a year out, backpacking across the world to learn new things from various masters of their arts, eventually deciding to settle down in the country, away from most people, with his only companion being a black cat who wandered into his home and took up residence; she would turn out to be a familiar. At the same time, he started practicing therapy, but behind closed doors, he also offered help to others in similar positions to the one he grew up with; he taught those with powers how to control and understand them.

He was noticed by the authorities when one of his proteges was seen casting spells in public against Joshua's advice, allowing them to trace everything back to him. A shadowy organization kept its eyes on him and waited for him to slip up, trying everything they could to test him. It pushed him to the edge of sanity and he checked himself into a clinic to recover. Little did he know that agents placed themselves into positions that had them analyzing his mental state.

They decided he wasn't a threat to the world but kept him under observation after he left, making sure their conclusion was accurate. He spent years living a simple life, helping others with their mental health issues, working on various mechanical jobs on the side as his father had taught him, and socializing on rare occasions in the local towns. Unless someone knew him well or had access to secret documentation, he was just a simple, quiet therapist in seclusion.

To those who did know him, he was a supernatural investigator and troubleshooter traveling the world to solve problems the public could never imagine.

As a warlock, Joshua can cast spells of varying kinds. Minor effects require simply a thought and a small gesture, then larger effects require a few spoken words. The largest effects require time and components (think of a recipe) and can be disturbed in progress. He can complete the casting of a major ritual and hold the final casting for later. Unfortunately, it's a conscious act to hold back casting a spell, so sleep or unconsciousness will release the spell; this can make life difficult, especially given the magnitude of rituals.

The Astral Plane sits behind reality and allows people with certain abilities to see things that normal people can't and even in some cases to project their presence or even travel through this plane. In Joshua's case, it allows him to see things within the Astral Plane (spirits, beasties, etc.) and to see the real world from other places while his body remains in place somewhere in the real world. He has to exercise caution, however, as some creatures can piggyback on him, or use his body if he doesn't take precautions.

Although there's nothing outwardly different about Joshua, his roots (being a Warlock) give him extended life, to the point of nigh immortality. He's learned how to use this to help heal others at the cost of some of his life force. Although he doesn't know exactly how long he'll live, nor how much he gives up every time he heals someone, he never considers it a loss to heal another, instead considering it something of a privilege.

Within his home, Joshua has a library for casting rituals, creating potions and scrolls, and poring over spellbooks (along with creating and working with his grimoire). It's a quiet, warded space where he can relax safely from any sort of threat. There's also a La-Z-Boy to relax in, and a cat bed for his familiar.

Joshua has a black cat as a constant companion and familiar. She has a name, and has been with him for longer than he cares to remember, yet seems to never age. Certain things seem to happen in her presence, but she remains enigmatic and aloof (much like any other cat!) He has an inkling there are a few special things about her, but she has always escaped his examination.
